Getting to know Alpaca Farming

Dec 17, 2019 8:10:14 PM

Well, we don't really farm alpacas but they live on a farm.  Alpacas are grazing animals that that like to eat hay. 1 ton of hay should be enough to feed an alpaca for a year, but it really depends on the living conditions and environment.  Of course in a cooler environment, they will burn more calories as with people and will then need more food as well. The min. requirement is one fenced-in acre in order to have 5-10 alpacas.  They are a herding animal and you shouldn't have just one, they like to live in groups for them to be most happy.

Alpaca wool is hypoallergenic.  Unlike what you find in sheep wool, there isn't anything that will irritate the skin such as lanolin or coarse fibers.  It is super soft for kids and babies. However, it is hard to keep clean, as it will require to be hand-washed with cold water and wool-approved soap.  So, just keep that in mind. Babies love the feel of the alpaca fabric and will be drawn to it in a blanket or other form that they can rub on their little faces.  It is very warm as well as lightweight, which makes it perfect for babies and small children.

The term "baby alpaca" is actually not about the age of the animal at all, but it is about the fineness of the wool.  The finest and most soft wool will come from the chest of the animal. This is the wool that will give you the softest outcome and the wool that is considered baby alpaca was once reserved for only royalty.  Luckily today, everyone gets to enjoy this fine wool. We choose alpaca wool because the wool is so soft but it has a higher insulating factor than that of sheep wool and is much lighter weight.

Dec 17, 2019 7:41:40 PM

Looking for great knitting ideas for alpaca wool?  Alpaca wool is a material that comes from the animal of an alpaca.  These are creatures that were first found in Ecuador as wild animals many centuries ago.  The Inka's domesticated them and breed them to produce various colored coats. They certainly watch their surroundings closely and like to observe what is going on around them.  Their wool has an insulation value that is 3-5 times higher than that of sheep wool. And, it is the strongest natural fiber produced known to man.
